Snakes On A Plane

There's a very distinct image in my mind of how an American audience receives a film, compared to how a British one would. The American audience is obviously a bit more rowdy; jokes are laughed at from the belly, popcorn is thrown into the air in disbelief, and there's a definite sense of companionship, as the film is enjoyed by the audience as a whole.

Compare that to the usual British audience; mute, cynical, and so very quick to hiss a loud 'shhh!' to the first people who breathes too loudly, and entirely antagonistic to the ideal of enjoying a movie along with everyone else. Unless the people laughing are in your group, they're either laughing too much, or not enough. This situation, I'm sad to say, represents the norm when it comes to cinemagoing in the UK.

How pleased I was then, when I went to see Snakes On A Plane! I could have sworn I was watching amongst Americans - the jokes were being laughed at, the scary bits were reacted to with more jolt than a gameserver (inside joke). The film seemed able to transcend the British sterility, and allowed people to completely lose their inhibitions, and enjoy the film for exactly what it was - one of the most entertaining films of the summer. Sure, the film has a silly name, silly plot, but it's got to be the most serious contender for film of the summer. While it won't win any awards for acting, it'll certainly win your heart thanks to the undeniable enjoyment it has to offer.
