One commando roll, and a lifetime of pain
A few years ago, I went paintballing for the first time. About a dozen of us went, and it was absolutely crazy! Getting into the camoflage gear, getting goggled up, and being given your ammo gives you a real buzz. We played a variety of games, and I did ok - got hit a few times, but also made some inspired moves, including making a run without cover, jumping over a fallen tree, and subsequently nailing the guy who was hiding behind it. It was beautiful.
Unfortunately, I gave myself a bit of a problem that day. I was in full swing, and thought it would be clever to do a commando roll over to some cover. Unfortunately, I'm not as gymnastic as I believe myself to be, and ended up landing right on my arse. Because the adrenaline was flowing, I didn't think I did myself and real damage, and didn't really feel any pain, so I carried on. When we finished up, my butt was seriously throbbing. I got home that evening, took a shower, and by the time I came out, I was in serious pain. Over the next few weeks, I could barely sit down - any time I put any pressure near my butt, it killed. Obviously, it was quite a problem working, as I spend my days sitting at a computer. I didn't really make that much of a fuss, and never told anyone (except my parents) how much pain I was in, as not only is it an embarassing injury, it's also a very embarassing story as to how I sustained it. For some reason I didn't go to the hospital, nor the doctors (I've got a thing about not wanting to waste their time), but I really wish I did. Two years on, my coccyx still gives me pain. I've done research on the condition, and there's not really anything that can be done about coccydynia (as it's called) - it sounds like there's a lifetime of awkwardness awaiting me, thanks to one stupid commando roll.
There are a few products on the market that can help you cope with coccydynia - one being the coccyx chair, which is designed to give you tailbone pressure relief, for a more comfortable sitdown. I could sure use one of those chairs! So, next time you see me fidgeting in my chair, you'll know whats wrong - I've learn my lesson though - no more commando rolls for me!
