Backing up (or, not)

Recently the hard drive in my desktop computer died. For most sensible people, this wouldn't be a problem, as they'd have a nice, simple backup plan where all of their important data went onto a disc or remote storage device every month, resulting in a small annoying, and an even smaller loss. Not us; we haven't backed up anything properly for years. What resulted from our failure to be sensible is that the majority of our photos, music, university work, and other work from our various projects vanished into the ether, never to be seen again.

I felt sadness, I felt depression, but most of all, I felt anger. Not anger at the company who manufactured the disc, but anger at myself for being stupid enough to not bother with a backup strategy.

So now it's time to learn from my mistake, and invest some money into a decent online backup solution. My choices are either go with a pre-built solution, or roll my own using webhosting I have access to. I'm not sure which one I'll choose, but either way, it's going to happen. IDrive seems quite good, and their rates are reasonable -- the only thing I don't know about them is how slow/fast their backup servers are. There's a lot of data I need backing up, so the quicker, the better. I'm going to give their free service a go and see how I get on.
