Autism and Music
We all like to listen to certain types of music, most notably because they're so good at spontaneously changing our mood. This is for a few reasons; Association, or Familiarity, in that we associate certain music with certain memories, and use it to remind ourselves of a better time. Escapism, in that we put on something we don't necessarily associate with anything in order to forget about something.
Do either of these reasons have a connection to autism? I think they possibly do. Have you ever been in a situation where you don't want to deal with some sort of social interaction, and you decide to listen to music instead? People do this all the time; whether they're walking down the street, sitting on a bus or train, or even trying to get their head down at work. When some autistic peopple are put into a situation they aren't sure how to cope with, often they'll clasp their ears, and possibly make some sort of noise to try and block out whichever social interaction they're struggling with. Aren't the two similar?
