10k training: the first two days

Day 1: 2.82 miles
Day 2: 3.14 miles

My training for the Brooks 10k officially started yesterday, and nicely tied in with the start of the 50k NikePlus challenge me and Chris have got going. Whichever one of us reaches 50k last buys the beers!

Training has started well, and a couple of solid days on the treadmill has allowed me to get 9.5 collective kilometres under my belt. My stamina leaves a lot to be desired, but 7 weeks of training should make it possible for me to manage a fairly respectable time. I'm aiming for 55 minutes, which means I need to be running 9 minute miles, roughly. It's possible!

The biggest factor I'm going to have to overcome to make running 10 consecutive kilometres is undoubtedly my weight. In the harsh light of day my figure is less than striking, and I currently weigh a shocking 15 stone. I'm going to have to drop at least a stone, I think, in order for my knees to be able to take the punishment.

A drop in weight, however, is contingent upon not be a greedy, burger-loving, curry sauce guzzling animal, so my appetite for the unhealthy is going to have to be put to one side for the next two months. Y'know, It's not the running that's the hard part - it's the not eating that's really going to be the true test.

Maybe it's time to do a ceremonial throwing out of all of the takeaway menus. I would do a ceremonial deleting of takeaway numbers from my phone, but I recently lost it, so in a way, one of the hardest parts of this little journey I'm undertaking has already been done subconciously! I knew I was a winner.
