10k training: going a bit further

At what point in a workout do you stop? Is pushing yourself to exhaustion always the right thing to do? If it is, my last run was a bit wrong.

I say wrong, but it's difficult to tell. If you feel you're strong enough to push for another half mile, even though you're recovering from injury, do you back out, or do you go for it? Backing out is always the easy option, and it's one which I took yesterday. It didn't feel like the easy option, though. I wanted to push things, and I wanted to add the extra distance. My feet can take it, and my lungs are getting used to being overwhelmed by the winter-chill, but I'm still pre-occupied with the thought of my legs taking too much, too soon, and ending up bashed up again. So, I stopped short.

Saying that, the run was a bit longer than I've managed previously, which indicates progress. If the imaginary distance/time graph in my head is projecting an upward curve, who cares at what rate the curve is flying towards the ceiling? At least my slow(ish) progress won't kill me.

Tomorrow I'm going to recalibrate my Nike+, as it's been coming up a couple of hundred metres short on each of my runs, according to Google Maps. 26 days to go.
